we have a town recycling center that takes almost anything except electronics for recycling. in addition to weekly curbside collections i separate magazine/shiny paper and office paper/junk mail and take to the center to insure it gets to the right recycler. i will often take cardboard too!

We always do the obligatory recycling of cans, bottles, plastic, etc. and luckily our garbage hauler is required to comply with.

we turn on our pondless waterfall not only for our relaxation and serenity but the birds love to bathe and play in the moving water. it also attracts rabbits, squirrels, outdoor cats and the occasional groundhog. it's quite the attraction for our cat 'ACE' who gawks at all the critters and will sometimes take a dip himself!!!

Speaking of birds - i have 2 birdhouses hung on my shed for them to nest. they will gather the loose grasses to build their nests inside the houses.

i have ornamental grasses around a pondless waterfall. I leave the grasses intact over the winter to provide seeds and cover for the birds that hang around in the northeast. birds are always stopping by for a nibble in the winter.

when screening compost from bins i store any excess in empty bags from cat food and cat litter. they're sturdy and hold a good amount of compost - and they stay out of landfills for many years!

i combine the food scraps from sink container with leaves, twigs and other yard waste in compost bins. you have to "turn the pile" to aerate and add water to get a good compost. i sift compost thru a screen and then Add to my vegetable garden or save in bags for potted plants or flower beds.

have a small container made for composting food scraps in sink. it's a good reminder to compost vs. just throw away the food scraps.

Save plastic food containers from take-out to store left-overs in refrigerator or in freezer. also use mason jars - get the plastic lids for them.

I save and freeze vegetable scraps and then make vegtable broth in my instant pot. on occasion have chicken bones/skin for chicken broth. use for soups, rice and other recipes. freezes well in reused plastic containers.
